Club History

The Tampa Bay Runners Club (TBR) was started by Bob Braman in 1981. Braman was a standout runner who coached the cross-country team at the University of South Florida and later became the head coach for track and cross-country at Florida State.

TBR, as it is affectionately called, quickly became the go-to club for runners of all ages and abilities. Folks joined the club for its social atmosphere as it became a good way to meet new people. There were even a few marriages as a result of joining TBR in the early days.

In 1982 the club put on its first race, the Strawberry Classic which was held in Plant City. In 1999, the race was moved to Temple Terrace due to construction issues near the race course. Now in its 41st year, the race attracts local runners as well as out-of-state runners. The race has been recognized by Florida Running and Triathlon magazine has one of the top races in Florida. TBR members enjoy camaraderie while planning the race and are thrilled when revenue from the race is given to two local charities, Meals on Wheels – Tampa and Children’s Dream Fund.

Throughout its history TBR has remained a steady presence in local running. TBR also sponsored the Rainbow Classic race held at Busch Gardens for a few years. In addition, TBR members volunteered at many local races, assisting with set-up, finish line and results.  At one point membership topped 400. With the advent of many other running clubs including pub and running store clubs, TBR membership has declined, but the club still remains a fun and welcoming presence in the running community. The club continues to have a social aspect with runners getting together for meals and other activities on occasion.

Slow runners, fast runners and everyone in between are always welcome to join TBR. There is no fee to join the club or run with us on our Wednesday night runs. Many folks have been motivated and inspired to increase their running distance after joining the club and TBR has served as a springboard to participating in longer races, such as a half-marathon, marathon or even a triathlon.

Heading into its fifth decade, TBR hopes to continue its legacy of providing a fun, friendly, and relaxed setting for running and meeting new people in the Tampa Bay area.
